Molecular Evidence for an Active Microbial Methane Cycle in Subsurface Serpentinite-Hosted Groundwaters in the Samail Ophiolite, Oman

چکیده

Serpentinization of ultramafic rock can generate conditions favorable for microbial methane (CH 4 ) cycling, including the abiotic production hydrogen (H 2 and possibly CH . Systems low-temperature serpentinization are geobiological targets due to their potential harbor life ubiquity throughout Earth’s history. Biomass in fracture waters collected from Samail Ophiolite Oman, a system undergoing modern serpentinization, yielded DNA RNA signatures indicative active methanogenesis methanotrophy. Intriguingly, transcripts proteins involved were most abundant highly reacted that have hyperalkaline pH elevated concentrations H These findings suggest biological cycling serpentinite-hosted aquifers, even under extreme high carbon limitation. observations underscore activity influence isotopic composition these systems, which is information could help identifying biosignatures on other planets.

Geological and Geochemical Controls on Subsurface Microbial Life in the Samail Ophiolite, Oman

Microbial abundance and diversity in deep subsurface environments is dependent upon the availability of energy and carbon. However, supplies of oxidants and reductants capable of sustaining life within mafic and ultramafic continental aquifers undergoing low-temperature water-rock reaction are relatively unknown. We conducted an extensive analysis of the geochemistry and microbial communities r...

Metagenomic Evidence for H2 Oxidation and H2 Production by Serpentinite-Hosted Subsurface Microbial Communities

Ultramafic rocks in the Earth's mantle represent a tremendous reservoir of carbon and reducing power. Upon tectonic uplift and exposure to fluid flow, serpentinization of these materials generates copious energy, sustains abiogenic synthesis of organic molecules, and releases hydrogen gas (H(2)). In order to assess the potential for microbial H(2) utilization fueled by serpentinization, we cond...

Coexisting serpentine and quartz from carbonate-bearing serpentinized peridotite in the Samail Ophiolite, Oman

Tectonically exposed mantle peridotite in the Oman Ophiolite is variably serpentinized and carbonated. Networks of young carbonate veins are prevalent in highly serpentinized peridotite, particularly near low-temperature alkaline springs emanating from the peridotite. An unusual feature in some samples is the coexistence of serpentine and quartz, which is not commonly observed in serpentinites....

Fossils of hydrothermal vent worms from cretaceous sulfide ores of the samail ophiolite, oman.

Fossil worm tubes of Cretaceous age preserved in the Bayda massive sulfide deposit of the Samail ophiolite, Oman, are apparently the first documented examples of fossils embedded in massive sulfide deposits from the geologic record. The geologic setting of the Bayda deposit and the distinctive mineralogic and textural features of the fossiliferous samples suggest that the Bayda sulfide deposit ...

Microbial Community Structure in a Serpentine-Hosted Abiotic Gas Seepage at the Chimaera Ophiolite, Turkey

The surface waters at the ultramafic ophiolitic outcrop in Chimaera, Turkey, are characterized by high pH values and high metal levels due to the percolation of fluids through areas of active serpentinization. We describe the influence of the liquid chemistry, mineralogy, and H2 and CH4 levels on the bacterial community structure in a semidry, exposed, ultramafic environment. The bacterial and ...
